Our Subjects

Grade 8 and 9 is the first introduction of many young learners to a High School or College setting and marks the completion of their primary education.
The nine compulsory learning areas in the General Education Training Phase (GET) are designed in such a way that they interlink.
This provides learners with the opportunity to consolidate both skills and knowledge and also to build awareness as to which subjects they will pursue in Grade 10.

The grade 8 and 9 subjects are:

  • English Home Language
  • Afrikaans First Additional Language
  • Life Orientation
  • Mathematics
  • Technology
  • Art and Culture
  • Economic Management Sciences
  • Social Sciences
  • Natural Sciences
  • Computer Literacy

Grade 10

gardens5Grade 10 is the first year that learners may choose subjects that are in line with their own individual interests and abilities. This is an important decision, and the subject choices offered are designed in such a way that learners may choose subjects from a broad spectrum of disciplines. Learners may attempt challenging subjects in the knowledge that, should they be unable to perform to expectations, they may still be able to change to another subject. Up to two subjects in Grade 10 may be changed. This is not a recommended course of action, but simply a safeguard to ensure that learners make the best possible choices for their futures.

A special mention of admission requirements to tertiary institutions:

Tertiary educational institutions make use of a point system when reviewing applications for admission to different disciplines. For example, a high number of points would be awarded for learners who perform well in Mathematics or Physical Science when applying for an Engineering degree, while greater emphasis would be placed on marks obtained in the languages for admission to an Arts degree.  It is important that learners examine the admission requirements and point-systems of the various tertiary educational institutions that pertain to the career they wish to pursue, and to then base their subject choices on these requirements.

Please note: Physical Sciences must be taken in conjunction with Mathematics. | A maximum number of two subjects may be changed.

Grade 11

It is very important to realize that in many subjects the Grade 11 and Grade 12 years form a single two-year programme, not two separate independent programmes. A learner may change a subject in Grade 11, but this should only occur in very special circumstances. Learners are tested at the end of Grade 12 on work that was covered during the Grade 11 year, and, of course, much of the Grade 12 year is based on work done in Grade 11. It is very important to note that many bursary programmes and tertiary institutions request the Grade 11 results when reviewing applications.

Grade 12

The end-of-year results that a learner obtains in Grade 12 determines whether provisional acceptance changes to full acceptance at tertiary level educational institutions.
Competition for entry to these institutions is very high, and the best of results are necessary to ensure proper placement.
Cape Town Studies Private High School is very proud of its 100% Grade 12 pass rate, and we attribute this pass rate to our diligent teachers and the academic, yet friendly, environment that our small classes create. Many of our learners are admitted to and excel at tertiary level institutions.

The annual Grade 12 camp and the ever-popular matric dance are wonderful opportunities for learners to cement lasting bonds and memories that they can carry into the future.
